Fears over emergence of Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 may start another exodus of Cambodians from Thailand

Thailand has stepped up patrols along its border with Cambodia to be on the on look out for illegal Cambodian migrant workers trying to slip back into Cambodia over fears of contracting the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

The same surge took place when the Delta variant was detected earlier this year, compelling thousands of Cambodian migrant workers to flee Thailand.

In one such border operation, seven Cambodian migrants were arrested by Thai border patrol soldiers as they tried to cross the Sa Kaeo border in Aranyaprathet district in an attempt to go back into Cambodia last week.
