Thailand on Thursday (January 20) reported 8,129 new COVID-19 cases, 6,978 recoveries and 19 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 7,915. Prisons: 214

▶︎ Recoveries: 6,978

Thursday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,353,062 with 21,987 deaths.

The news comes as the resumption of new “Test and Go” registrations, COVID-19 rezoning and yet another extension of Thailand’s nationwide State of Emergency, in place since March 2020, will be proposed to and decided by the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) today (Thursday).

New applications for “Test and Go” program, which requires only minimal quarantine of no more than one night while awaiting negative COVID-19 results, have been suspended since December 22nd, to curb the spread of the Omicron variant. Currently, people who have been granted a “Thailand Pass” QR code for the program can still enter the country. The program resumption may begin on February 1st but possibly with stricter measures.

And how are the Authorities to know who has bought and used an ATK test kit when they are not regulated in any way.

What Tosh.

Just thinking about the situation in the prison system, Omicron must have spread in there by now. I wonder how long we'll be waiting for them to tell us if ever this time? Perhaps they'll need to prosecute the prison officials for keeping it quiet.....lol

it was reported by the Authorities last week, that Omicron was not yet inside the Prisons.

The Prison Infections are Delta Variant

Those who don’t report positive ATK results can face penalties – DDC director

Has your at-home Covid-19 test come out positive? If so, report the results to government health officials. Those who do not report their result can face charges. Speaking at a press conference, the director-general of the Department of Disease Control, Opas Karnkawinpong, warned that anyone who finds themselves infected with Covid-19 by using the ATK test and keeps it a secret will be prosecuted.

Well they do know, and many of us know from anecdotal evidence it's not being done.

Yawn. My prediction is that all these rules and restrictions - the whole monumental fuss, fluster, furore, palaver, bruhaha, song and dance, dog and pony show - will be over by Easter - that is, early April - if not sooner. Start planning your holidays.

I've predicted the course of this pandemic precisely since the beginning (using Spanish flu as the template) so you can put higher confidence in this forecast than anything else you've ever heard about SARS-Cov-19 from anyone else over the past two years. You're welcome.

Is it too hard to say Delta caused the 19 deaths?

Its not been reported, why? Certainly unlikely to all be Omicron deaths in my opinion but if you know of reports please share

Even if you’re correct that the course of the current virus from China will roughly follow that of the 1918 influenza pandemic, the big difference is that back in 1920 there were no PCR or rapid antigen tests. Smaller case numbers found by these tests will keep the current pandemic going for many more years.

You must have bought into the plandemic conspiracy theory stories if your post is truly what you believe. Unless of course your just being sarcastic.

So, are you agreeing with Mr Derek that the pandemic will be over by the first half of this year, and things will be back to normal by then? Certainly hope you’re correct!

The pandemic as you call it will become endemic this year sometime, doesn't take a genius to see the world case loads diminishing.  Take a look at Worldometer for info.  While Omicron has increased the numbers everywhere, and quite rapidly one could say, those areas first hit with spikes are now on the back side and seeing decreases. We will always see variants of the virus for the rest of our lives, just like you see with other types of viruses.  However, with the vaccinations, for those taking them, the overall picture each day improves.

Again, hope you’re right. My original point was that if we’d had the sophisticated tests we have now back in 1920, the 1918 flu pandemic would have lasted a lot longer than 2 years.

We're we any worse for the wear back then because we didn't have sophisticated tests. The world moved forward then and should now regardless.

Does it strike anyone as odd that the graph of daily new cases seems to deviate from the patterns seen in SA, UK, Denmark, Germany, and Israel (among others)? All of these places show a very sharp increase with a sharp peak and dramatic fall in cases. Thailand's numbers increased quickly, but more or less levelled off.

Maybe this is an artifact of testing? Are they doing "active case finding anymore?" Also, it is clear that now that ATKs are available everywhere that people are self-testing, if testing at all, and then not telling anybody if they are positive. The only way that the government knows to come for you is if your positive result is reported by the lab that processes your RT-PCR test.

It would not be politically expedient to reopen Test and Go while the number of cases is showing a dramatic increase. Maybe they have decided that they just don't want to really know.

Come on guys who ever belive those figures need their head examined, Australia with a population of just 25.6 million people, clocks up an average of 80.000 infections, the hospilatation went up 900% .And a death rate of about 60 per day. Give me a break.

Are they doing active case finding? Very minimal. Nearly all PCR positives are from walk ins now. ATK reporting about 2k a day average yet they ran out of 3.5million GPO supplied ones within a few days. Are people reporting ATK positives, majority no. Who wants to risk incarceration in isolation, especially if your a farang, for what is in most cases a similar experience at worst to a dose of flu. I truly think they know the high rate of infection but don't want it to be officially known for fear of putting off "tourists" and the old save face, haven't we done well. Anutn said Thailand was too strong for Omicron and would beat it. If they were reporting true infection it wouldn't suit Anutin's image.
