Hi

I am a british male married to a thai female, we both reside in the UK, My wife has lived here for 3 years and has a permanent residence.

We plan to bring her thai daughter over to the UK for a months holiday in october this year. As my wife is preganent she will not be travelling to thailand to pick up her daughter as the baby is due in october, therefore i will be the one who goes to collect her in thailand.

Can we arrange the visa from the UK via the thai embassy here?

or

Do i need to go over there with the necessary paperwork to get her visa and bring her back.

Also i would want to bring her on a one way ticket, she will be returning to thailand 1 month later with my parents (grand parents) will this cause problems as you might have to book a return ticket as conditions of the visa??

There is no reason why your wife's family in Thailand can't assist your step-daughter with the application process, but if she is older then 5, she will have to present herself at the visa application centre in Bangkok in order to be photographed and fingerprinted.

Having a return ticket is not a prerequisite of getting the visa, although a single ticket may raise a few eyebrows upon arrival in the UK. If you are unable to escort your step-daughter to the UK, some airlines offer an auntie service whereby a member of staff will take responsibility for the child during the flight and will hand him/her over to a designated person upon arrival in the UK.

If your step daughter does not have a Thai passport, both her parents (named on the birth certificate) have to present themselves with the child at a passport office in person except if your wife has a sole custody agreement she can go alone with the child and the agreement. Others cannot get the child a passport. See Thai passport requirements .

Your wife will have to sign the visa application form (which you can download from here ) and will have to present the sole custody agreement or permission from the father to apply for the visa and as Scouse says it will have to be presented in Bangkok.

I would try to avoid entering UK on a O/W ticket she will surely be questioned although you may be able to talk her in. Cant you book her and your relatives on the same airline and adjust the dates later, it'll probably also be the cheaper option. You may also need a letter giving permission from her mother/ father to actually leave Thailand with her.

Thanks for the advice.

No my stepdaughter does'nt have a thai passport at present. Her mother cannot travel to thailand as she is pregant and the childs father passed away when she was only 1 year old.

Is there no way at all that my wifes daughter can get a thai passport without my wife going to thailand?

Not according to my experience and the MFA regulations. As the father is deceased then your wife must also present the death certificate (not the sole custody agreement)
