Thailand on Wednesday (March 2) reported 22,197 new COVID-19 cases, 19,093 recoveries and 45 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

Wednesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,934,544 with 23,021 deaths.

The news comes as the Department of Disease Control (DDC) has warned that daily COVID-19 cases in Thailand could exceed 100,000 by the Songkran holiday in April under the worst-case scenario.

The DDC noted that whether the infection level decreases or increases in the coming weeks depends on how strictly safety precautions are followed.

The agency also urged the public to avoid group activities, work from home, postpone unnecessary travel, maintain high immunization rates, and follow VUCA (Vaccine, Universal Prevention, COVID-Free Setting, and ATK) procedures.

How many folk are experiencing flu like symptoms and are not running off to obtain a rapid test.

Personally I would worry more about how many people have very little clue on how to drive and yet are on the road every day.

95% of the cases reported in Thailand are without symptoms or very light (MOPH). The majority of the population has anti-bodies, either from vaccination or from exposure.

Of course people at risk (age, conditions, frail) should take good care of themselves, because it's still possible to die.

I personally will continue wearing a mask and observing some precautions, I will consider a 4th vaxx in a few months, but I don't see the need for extensive testing, restrictions, hysteria.

Apart from Thailand, COVID right now is booming in many parts of Asia, unlike much of the rest of the world.

From Johns Hopkins' March 1 COVID update:

"In Hong Kong, an Omicron variant-fueled surge has overwhelmed the city’s “dynamic zero” strategy—the same as mainland China’s—raising panic and fear among residents who emptied grocery store shelves over the weekend. The COVID-19 fatality rate in Hong Kong is now the highest in the developed world, leaving the healthcare system overloaded with patients and mortuaries at capacity."

Also in South Korea:

"The number of new COVID-19 cases and related deaths also are soaring in South Korea, with the nation setting a single-day mortality record on February 28 with 114 deaths."

Just like last fall with the peaks of the Delta wave, the current Omicon wave in Asia is occurring after the peaks that have already occurred in places such as the U.S. and U.K.

Cases and related there have been falling in recent weeks, but are still rising in many parts of Asia.
