The UN Global Plastics Treaty is an opportunity for Thai startups and entrepreneurs to shine

News that 175 countries, including Thailand, have agreed to forge a binding treaty to end plastic pollution is good news for Thailand’s entrepreneurs who are eager to find solutions to one of Thailand’s most pressing issues: plastic waste.

 

A landmark resolution at the recent fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly has pledged to create an international legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution. The treaty covers the full life cycle of plastics, introducing a circular approach to their production, use and disposal. Scheduled to be ratified by 2024, there remains plenty of work to do, but the agreement presents a unique opportunity for Thailand to set a global example in environmental leadership.

Thailand is the world’s 6th largest contributor to marine plastic waste, generating approximately 322,000 of the 8-10 million tonnes that are dumped into the ocean every year, according to the World Bank. Inefficiencies in plastic management have resulted in much of the country’s waste being incinerated, dumped in unsanitary landfills or leaked into the environment, especially via waterways. This not only results in animals and people ingesting microplastics, but impacts water and air quality, and accelerates climate change.

Sorry, but until Thais learn that anywhere outside the car window  is not a trash bin, nothing will change. I cycle with the wife to Tops every morning, never seen such a polluted country in my life - and there even a lady that sweeps the road once a week  but it comes back daily. Whole load of them just seem lazy to me. That said, trying to find a bin sometimes in Thailand is like trying to find a sexy lady at 2am in the morning after the world's Navies are all on shore leave.

I cannot for the life of me ever imagine Thais being able to survive without their plastic.

 

Plastic items, seal in plastic, wrapped in plastic and served to you in a plastic bag.

 

Drinks in plastic cups served to you in a plastic carrier bag.

 

Individual items all wrapped in plastic, placed into plastic bags, all of which then go into another plastic bag.

Until Thais can learn to live with an alternative to plastic nothing with change.

Lets face it they even eat and drink directly out of plastic bags.

Dont  know why Im bothering with the  forum and go  ahead and ban suspend me again mods, I declared Thais  dirty pigs after their weekend  visits to the beach close to where I  live, every weekend  beach  full of  rubbish and a few  days  ago right outside my  house some <deleted> fundraiser from  the local temple  stopped  outside with 60  villagers  in tow,music  blasting full  volume for 50  minutes, I live on my own away from any neighbours  out  of the village 1km......after the filth had  left  I  looked out to see 76 plastic  single use  water cups with a plastic  lids  all over the floor. looks  like EVERY SINGLE THAI PERSONhad  dumped them opn the floor...........Lovely  Thai  Buddhists....no problem picked them all  up filled two carrier  bags and threw  them down at the temple,  where  they had  all  come from.
