Most foreigners can open a bank account in Thailand using just their passport as identification. However if you hold a temporary or visit visa, a bank may ask for a 'certificate' from the British Embassy. Please contact the bank/branch to check if one of the following documentary services we provide may be acceptable: Certified copy of a British Passport Affirmation of Residency Further information on the services we provide are available from Gov.UK at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/notarial-and-documentary-services-guide-for-thailand. Is a certificate of residency from immigration acceptable rather than a proof from the embassy?
SheikYabodyline
You don't need anything but perseverance and persistence. Just keep doing the rounds, be patient and courteous, with as many supporting documents as possible. You will eventually strike gold. Don't let them sell you an expensive debit card when you fill in the forms, the bog-standard one is usually sufficient.

Unless wanting an extension based on marriage many people would deposit significantly less. Many here on long term "visits" use agents either because they don't have the funds or prefer not to tie their money up. I find your statement naive but it was probably made out of self interest.......
