Popular Post Moonlover
Very cool headed of the passenger of the CRV to keep the car under control. It must been a very traumatic experience for her. Edited April 1, 2022 by Moonlover
ezzra
Judging from the picture the truck driver didn't have a chance there, it must have been a very high speed collusion to cause that much damage and take the lives of two people, i wonder though, why it took 2 km to stop the CRV?... 1 1

The truck hit a large tree! The CRV was being steered from the passenger seat from were one cannot reach the controls. The passenger might not even have been an experienced driver! Kudus to her.

Perhaps because the driver was dead behind the wheel and the two injured female passengers either, did not know how to, or weren't physically capable of stopping the car? Otherwise good work.

She managed to steer it for 2 kilometres.. lucky for her she didn't kill anyone else. I wasn't criticising her just saying there were better options. Otherwise good work. Most cars these days are ‘keyless’ and don’t have a a handbrake. Modern cars have a pushbutton start, which means you can’t simply turn off the ignition, besides, doing so would disable to power-steering, as such would be somewhat dumb idea. Modern cars also now have a ‘parking brake’ which is a button or switch and not something which can be activated while the car is moving. As you pointed out, the only thing a passenger could do is knock it out of gear and hope it cruses to a halt while steering to keep the vehicle on the road, or even nudging the auto-gearbox into lower gears and ultimately into 1st to slow it down. Yes there were better options and If she'd been an experienced driver then she would have known how to set the hand brake move the shift to neutral. But it seems that she wasn't, or maybe in a panicked state and couldn't think straight. I asked my wife to set the handbrake on her daughter's car a couple of weeks back. She didn't know where it was and she DOES have a license! Edited April 1, 2022 by Moonlover

This accident took place on a dual carriageway so it is unlikely that this was a head on collision. I suspect that the truck was shunted from the rear by the CRV and swerved off the road into the tree. The truck has no underride guard so it's probable that the CRV went under the tailgate, killing the driver, but was able to keep rolling because its underpinnings were still intact. The two ladies inside were very lucky. It must have been a terrifying ordeal.
