Am looking for a good source for heartworm tablets as I have 5 dogs. Does anyone know of anywhere they can be bought in bulk wholesale or at good prices?

What about chatuchak, do they sell them cheaper than the pet stores?

There are Thai made heartworm tablets that contains ivermectin in the same dose as heart guard does, and it's a LOT cheaper.

An even more cheaper way to prevent heartworm is ivermectin by injection, subcutanous.

For dose and quality you better contact Bambina.

Another option is to keep dogs in or under a mosquito net after dark and do a SNAP test every year.

Thanks. I do buy the Thai tablets vermax or somomec, but I was really wondering where I could buy them in bulk at a cheaper price.

Where do you get the injectable ivermectin, as I asked my vet recently about hearworm prevention injections and he said they were not available in Thailand!

what kind of vet is that? :o

ivermec solution for injection you should be able to buy in petshops. here in samui they have different brands, some imported from holland others thai brands. all the same, i think, but thai brands a third cheaper usually. i inject my dogs every two months with 1cc per 15 kg bodyweight. ask your vet for more details, or better go to a new vet :D

ivermec injections also good against skin mites, ticks and fleas, roundworm, hookworm and other kind of parasites.

I would be cautious with the ivermectin when planning to inject it by yourself.

Ivermectin is not without danger. Just recently saw a customer dog with an ivermectin overdose. He just bearly made it through, and we don't know the after effects yet.

Doses for heartworm prevention, mange treatment and tick/flea prevention are not the same. And if a dog is treated against mange or has received an injection against ticks/fleas, heartworm prevention at the same time is not necessary. I add this note, as many vet's will still will inject. I assume that's a money thing, but not in the benefit of the animal, as it receives a double dose then.

If you are thinking of injecting yourself, I would strongly recommend to PM Bambina for advice first.

In Chiang Mai, Ivermectin in big bottles can be purchased at Nam Ping Passoosath, which is a whole seller for animal med's and petshop. Maybe Bambina can advice you on this one as well, as you both are in BKK.

no, I wouldn't be thinking of injecting myself. I would be consulting my vet first.

Nienke, you are lucky to have avvess to a pet meds/petshop wholesale. That is exactly what I am trying to find in Bangkok.

I would heed Nienke's advice about treatment schedule. Having said that I have been injecting several dogs who otherwise would receive nothing plus dropping Frontline on back of neck. The important thing is with Ivermectim is to do it subcutaneously under a fold of loose skin not in the muscle. Obviously remove air from the syringe before. It can be a little irritating to the dog but usually no problem. To avoid this don't be injecting in the skin as you are going in or out, get it under first.

My dog has serious problems probably from heartworm (which I am addressing on another thread) ......amazingly no vet ever suggested it to me.......so do use prophylactic treatment of some sort.

I am still interested in a generic Frontline. Is it out there?

Hi, I have 5 dogs. Been using Frontline for years now. Costly but effective. Or should I say - was effective. My dogs continue to have an unusually large army of ticks these past 2 months. Switched to Bayer but still the ticks and flea colonies, buried in the skin noticeably at their rump, persist. Not sure what to do now, as I do not want to add any more chemicals to their bodies. Emptying plastic vials of Frontline and Bayer at their necklines while needed, nevertheless never did sit well with me. BTW where in CMai is Nam Ping Passoosath, the wholesaler ofanimal med's and petshop. Cheers. Good info. Thanks. :o

I felt reticent at using chemicals too Jingjoke.

Now my dog has a blood borne parasite caught from ticks which could easily have killed him if i didn't take action quickly. He is still too ill from this to be treated for probable serious heartworm which requires some degree of resilient health.

Huge rainstorm and my internet went down yesterday. :o

The Nam Ping Passoosath has several branches in Chaing Mai, in fact about 10, but I can only recall three of them:

* Main one on the Suthep Road: If you come from Suan Dok Gate, pass Suan Dok Temple, then just before you can turn right onto the Nimmanhemin road it's on your left.

* On the Doi Saket road, approximately 50 to 100 meter before the intersection with the middle ringroad on you left when heading to Doi Saket.

* On the Southern rongroad: Coming from Superhighway and heading airport, take the parallel next to the over-pass at the intersection of Nong Hoi. At the intersection with lights go straight towards airport. Just after the over-pass reaches the ground it's on your left.

* There is one in Mae Jo if I remember well, but I'm not sure where.

Hope this helps,

Nienke
