Letterboxes in Thailand?

Hi all.

 

I have a one page letter, ready to go in an envelope, with appropriate postage stamps - can I put in a letterbox? Or must I visit a post office?

Mostly they're outside the post offices.

I have but I would not personally risk using the ones I have seen. Why can you not go to the post office?
