An outbreak of the monkeypox virus in North America and Europe is primarily spreading through sex among men with about 200 confirmed and suspected cases across at least a dozen countries, World Health Organization officials said Monday.

The outbreak has quickly advanced across Europe and North America over the last week and is expected to be far more widespread as more doctors look for the signs and symptoms. Two confirmed and one suspected case of monkeypox in the U.K. were reported to the WHO just 10 days ago, the first cases this year outside of Africa where the virus has generally circulated at low levels over the last 40 years, the organization said.

Health officials in the U.K. and Belgium have introduced three-week quarantines to prevent the transmission of monkeypox, as the disease continues to spread across Europe.

In a document published Friday, the U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA) advised people who have had close contact with an infected person to self-isolate for 21 days.

According to the UKHSA, "high risk" exposure to the virus could occur via contact with a patient’s broken skin, mouth, nose or bodily fluids, but it could also happen through contact with contaminated clothes or bedding.

High risk contacts include sexual partners, people who live in the same house, or anyone who comes into contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids, for example via a cough or sneeze, officials said.

Monkeypox update:

100 confirmed or suspected infections in Europe

May 24 (Reuters) - Nearly 20 countries where monkeypox is not endemic have reported outbreaks of the viral disease, with more than 100 confirmed or suspected infections mostly in Europe.

The outbreaks are raising alarm because monkeypox, which spreads through close contact and was first found in monkeys, mostly occurs in west and central Africa, and only very occasionally spreads elsewhere. read more

That's a rather misleading headline. No WHO official is quoted as saying that the virus is spreading through sex.

They say that:

the most recent surge in cases appears to have been spread among men who have sex with other men

Which is not the same thing. This disease is not known to be sexually transmitted and according to at least one other report I've seen:

a leading hypothesis is that whatever transmission is occurring between sex partners isn’t being spread through sex itself. Rather, it could be contracted during the close contact that comes with sex.
