More than three hundred grade 5 and 6 students in Hua Hin are now more confident in how to deal with a serious medical emergency after learning some potentially life-saving first aid skills.

On Wednesday (June 8th), Hua Hin Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul formally launched the municipality’s annual Merit Maker project aimed at preventing drowning deaths among children.

The project sees students from schools in Hua Hin Municipality learn about drowning prevention and water safety.

As part of the training, a total of 360 students were given hands-on training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, CPR, and the use of an AED (automated external defibrillator).

They would be better off teaching them to swim in an effort of prevention as well as resuscitation skills .

Great development, was personally surprised to see an AED hanging at full moon beach on phangan. Should have it at every beach together with some first aid kit.

This has been a long time coming in Thailand.

It would be excellent to see swimming, life saving and first aid taught in schools.

On this subject.. in my sons school swim class today they have to take ‘clothes to swim in’.. they will learn life saving skills

....swimming in clothes, how to take off clothes in water, how to make a float from trousers.....  (although how many people wear trousers in Thailand !!!)... ultimately, the best thing for kids to learn is how to swim and about water safety....

Teaching first aid an CPR is excellent - but Thailand also does not have good samaritan laws in place, instead their flawed legal system allows for someone to be sued when a non-professional attempts to render assistance....

Well done.  ????

At least it is a start.

Long journeys are made with those small first steps.

Good idea. But many drownings are of children aged between 5 and 15 who are allowed by their parents/guardians to play near water with no supervision. The children can't swim and, surprise, surprise they drown. Drowning is the most common cause of death in this age group.

This is like teaching women how to get an abortion rather than teach them about safe sex.

Its great they are learning CPR but surely swimming is first, then how do deal with any difficulties whilst swimming (First thing is on your back and hand under the chin to swim the one that has gotten into difficulty in the water, then CPR.
