A deputy at the Bangkok metropolitan police has advised Bang Rak police to buy marijuana in their jurisdiction and send it to the army for testing. 

 

It is the latest story - this time from INN - that shows how the hamstrung Thai police are in a total shambles following the legalization of marijuana on June 9th. 

 

The force is a farce, though in their defence it is the politicians and an almost complete lack of foward planning that has left them carrying the can, notes ASEAN NOW.

 

In the latest situation met deputy Pol Maj-gen Nitthithorn Jintakanon contacted the Bang Rak police (in the Silom area of the Thai capital) after a video on social media showed people smoking in the streets. 

 

He advised that the only thing to do was stop people causing annoyance by smoking in public and prevent minors and pregnant women accessing the drug. 

 

He advised that those in the video should be spoken to by Bang Rak officers. 

 

But it was concerns that marijuana is being laced with illegal drugs that caused the real interest in INN's report.

 

Nitthithorn said that police should go and buy some weed, make sure it is sealed in a ziplock bag and then send it to the army testing lab to determine its precise composition. 

 

This would cost 3,000 baht a time and they would need to look into what budget should be used for such testing. 

 

The "illegal drug" that might be along with the legal marijuana was not stated in this report.

Heard 'stories' that the stuff from Burma was laced with Coke/Heroin etc and other unknowns.

Sounds more like a recruiting poster campaign, no doubt there would be many volunteers to do the testing .........................LOL

Why on earth would the army have a drug testing lab and the police wouldn't? ????

As we all know, the rollout was a total mess. One day illegal and the next day it's given a green light and even giving plants away to citizens. No public discourse or debates, no real planning. Just enjoy and be responsible! Only then did they start thinking about the ramifications; regulations, laws, restrictions, procedures, enforcement, and on and on. We get to see it play out daily now.

What?  Why?

It's such a non-issue.  Has Thailand all of a sudden gone Reefer Madness crazy?  No.
A minority of the population can grow and use cannabis now without worrying about being thrown into prison. 
I'd say most Thais I know aren't interested in recreational use.  They are into using it for medicine. 
Now us farang.  Maybe that's different.  And it should be a good thing.  One less thing pot smoking tourists need to worry about, especially if they can smoke it in their own country.

you act like marijuana is a new thing, when in fact it isn't. everybody who wanted weed has had access to it for decades. Like prostitution the fact that it was illegal was an inconvenience, little more.

there has been opiated hash around in the past but it was very specialty and you paid more for the privilege.  There is absolutely no upside to lacing weed with drugs like coke or heroin. there is a ceiling on how much folks will pay for weed, and dumping a drug that cost 3x5 times as much into your stash, doesn't make sense. Besides, people either already have coke or heroin or they dont. You either go for the real mcoy and add it t0 you bud or you abstain.

 

Then of course there is the fact that weed has just been LEGALIZED. Why would you make it illegal again by adding scheduled norcotic, especially if you operate a shopfront.

It is the FDA that would be in charge of the testing, but one can't just ask them to determine the exact compositon. The names of the substancs to look for must be specified.

The under statement of the year... does anybody here or even in the whole of Thailand, knows exactly what you can or can't do with the weed, or what are the precise laws regarding growing, keeping using and selling Marijuana i'd like to now...

It was common during the Vietnam War era for American servicemen to return home addicted to heroin from smoking the local weed while deployed.

You don't know many Thais do you?  I have a friend who has been selling the stuff to ordinary Thais for years.  Now he is swamped off his feet with orders and now has eight employees.  He works long hours seven days a week just to get orders out of the door.

The Army spotted a business opportunity and reinvested some of their "surplus cash".

 

The Police gave their "surplus cash" to their Mia Nois.
