Chemical castration for sexual offenders in exchange for reduced prison time

Thailand will allow sexual abusers to undergo chemical castration in exchange for reduced sentences or parole

Thailand is close to introducing chemical castration for rapists as a means of combating sex crimes. On July 11, the country approved a bill that would give the right to choose a voluntary chemical castration procedure in exchange for a reduced prison sentence.

The bill was approved by 145 senators, with two abstentions, and the final decision will be made after royal assent and official publication in the Royal Gazette.

Of the 16,413 convicted sex offenders released from Thai prisons between 2013 and 2020, 4,848 committed repeat offences, according to Thailand’s Department of Corrections.

Under the bill, criminals who repeatedly rape girls and children would be able to voluntarily consent to injections after undergoing a medical examination. Regularly taking the drug would lower the inmates’ testosterone levels, and with it their sex drive. After the procedure, offenders will be monitored for 10 years and will have to wear electronic bracelets.

Similar laws are already in place in Estonia, Argentina, other European countries, and some U.S. states. Forced chemical castration is sentenced for paedophilia in Poland, Moldova, Indonesia, South Korea and other countries.

“I want this law passed as quickly as possible,” Justice Minister Somsak Tepsutin said Tuesday. “I don’t want to see news about something bad happening to women again,” he said.

Jaded Chouwilai, director of the Progressive Women and Men’s Movement Foundation in Thailand, a nongovernmental organization that focuses on sexual violence, among other issues, said the use of chemical castration would not help solve the problem of sexual crimes.

“Convicts must be rehabilitated by changing their thinking in prison,” he said. “The use of punishment, such as execution or injectable castration, reinforces the idea that the offender can no longer be rehabilitated.”

Researchers also dispute the effectiveness of this method of treating criminals and believe that lowering testosterone levels won’t help get rid of inappropriate sexual behaviour.

If they started with the basics, and allowed teachers to fail kids in school the example would be set at a very young age. The end result is that Thais grow up thinking that they can do anything and get away with it. My own country is going through a 'shooting rage' right now and I also know, as a teacher, that there are fewer and fewer consequences in schools for fear of being sued, being accused of being a molester etc...

This is what you get when there are no consequences in a society. I just think of the accident statistics on Thai roads. Maybe if the police started doing there jobs and patrolled once in a while things would change.

... Oh, I forgot, they don't have a budget for patrol cars, but they do for patrol submarines.

I can guarantee no offender can been rehabilitated after execution !

I'd rather have life or death sentences for any repeat violent offender.  Crime against a minor, life sentence first time offender.  Give them a choice of life or death sentence.   Chem castration, not sure that even works.   What's to stop them from buying testosterone.

Some people just shouldn't be walking among us.  Once you hurt someone, you have no rights as a human.

Why not both....?? chemical castration and the whole prison time...

I think there are criminals who wish they could stop themselves but they can't control themselves. Offering a means of lowering desire is a way out. It isn't as final as execution. A criminal who longer desires to rape may be on the way to rehabilitation.

I'm 100% for this. Excellent policy.

Chemical castration has already been shown to be ineffective in prevent sexual assaults especially towards minors.  Trials in S. Korea and Germany have already determined this.

While chemicals will reduce testosterone and male sex drive, rape and sexual assaults, especially against children are not always sexual but more cases of control, violence and true perversion.  Assaults on children are often done with objects and not by the man himself, so giving him ED doesn't doe a thing to prevent the desires.

The only thing that Will work is Normal Castration and the Full prison term. Chemical castration isn't working very well.

Did you miss all the BMWs and Teslaa the Police have been buying?

EVERYTHING here is graft.

Why use chemical,  when bolt cutters are so cheap???

I'm a strong believer in the old saying "where there's a will, there's a way".

How did chemical castration turn out for Alan Touring?

These work better, are 100% reliable and readily available.
