A newly released video shows a team of volunteers, veterinarians and other park staff trying to rescue a baby elephant and its mother after they fell into a utility hole in Thailand's Khao Yai National Park.

Yes, a very good rescue effort.

But I have to ask why there is an open utility hole in a national park which is teeming with elephants, some with babies.  It's an accident waiting to happen.  Common sense would suggest that this hole should either be covered with a heavy steel lid (able to withstand the weight of an elephant), or a strong steel fence around it.

Common sense?  Oh wait a minute!  This is Thailand......

Absolutely amazing. Just when you thought humanity was doomed they CPR an elephant and reunite with baby. Now can they do something about european warmongers. One of those darts would be a start!

The drain was on a golf course - next to the park.

That can be clearly seen in photographs in The Times.

The mother and calf had crossed a road to get to the golf course.

A bit of good news I’m delighted

That is simply the way things are here, it is not a problem or concern until it is one.  Safety and proactive action on it are rare.

I'd even donate a whole crate of these darts. Finally a sensible investment.
