A deadly virus was just identified in Ghana: What to know about Marburg

 

 

After the coronavirus pandemic and the rise of monkeypox cases, news of another virus can trigger nerves globally. The highly infectious Marburg virus has been reported in the West African country of Ghana this week, according to the World Health Organization.

 

Two unrelated people died after testing positive for Marburg in the southern Ashanti region of the country, the WHO said Sunday, confirming lab results from Ghana's health service. The highly infectious disease is similar to Ebola and has no vaccine.

 

Health officials in the country say they are working to isolate close contacts and mitigate the spread of the virus, and the WHO is marshaling resources and sending specialists to the country.

If anyone has read ‘The Hot Zone’.... a novel about viral hemorrhagic fevers; particularly ebolaviruses and marburgviruses  then this name [Marburg] should be familiar to them.

 

I read this book back in Uni....  I scared the living cr@p out of me... still does !!...  the movie; Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey captures some of the fear, but the book itself is spine chilling considering its based on fact. 

 

I dance in front of the Devil and laugh in the face of Covid but excrete my internal organs in the presence of Ebola and Marburg viruses....  Horrible stuff but fortunately (for the aggregate population) so deadly it kills before it travels too far (hopefully).

Since there is no treatment or vaccine for this, quarantine is the ONLY way to stop it.

There is a TV series called "The Hot Zone" that is accurate about the outbreak and the steps taken to contain (and coverup) the shipment of monkeys, the first season. Much better than the Hoffman one...
