I bought a new laptop and was advised to buy a new telephone- Nokia 6070 to connect to the internet so I can lie on my hammock and read Thai Visa!

The new laptop sems ok - Acer Aspire.

The new telephone seem alright but no decent games.

The problem is that I can't connect to the internet. I've sorted it out(eventually) with DTAC but when I installed the Nokia SUite and tried to connect it says that "no modem found". Any suggestions to what I can do?

Make sure you have the latest version of PC Suite, at least Ver. 6. 83. 14. 1

Connect via USB cable and click on "Connect to the internet" in PC Suite.

What operating system do you have? Is it legitimate and current? How are you connecting your phone to your PC?

With a Nokia 6070 you could use either IrDA or a Pop-Port-USB cable. Configuring the cable connection can be next to impossible. With ~ eight Nokia phones I have never been able to get a cable connection (DKU-2, DKU-5, CA-42, CA-53) working.

Have you walked through the "Get Connected" screens with Nokia PC Suite? Current versions of Nokia PC Suite have all the necessary drivers

BTW the 6070 does not support EDGE so will be a bit slow; a much better choice would be a Nokia 3110 Classic with support EDGE, and also BlueTooth and has a standard mini-USB cable connection.

It seems to be (one of many) glitches in the pc suite software...

You'll have to install the modem yourself. It's been a while since i done it but I'll try to walk you through...

Make sure your phone is connected.

Go to control panel, and click on "add hardware"

Let the wizard look for hardware, it won't find any.

Then mark the box besides "yes, I already connected the hardware", click next

You'll get a list of installed hardware, scroll all the way down and click on "add a new hardware device"

Mark the box "install the hardware that I manually select from a list" and click next

In the list shown click on "modems"

Mark the box next to "Don't detect my modem, I will select from a list(advanced)", click next

If all went well you should see under Manufacturers Nokia listed, click on it and choose the proper modem to install, then everything should go automatic and tour modem should appear in pc suite...

Cheers

Apologies, the Nokia 6070 does support EDGE. I should know as I have one!

This model does have limited internal memory but you can add any Series 40 game (.jar), and even part of an MP3 for a ring-tone, into the Gallery for use provided you watch the memory usage.

I downloaded the Nokia PC thing from the net and now get to the last part and it asks " on which ports do you want to instal it"?

But I can't do anything and the next button doesn't work. :o

I've had problems before trying to get Nokia phones connected through cable, but I always blamed it on the cheap aftermarket cable I bought (instead of the original Nokia DKU-5)

I ended up using infrared instead...

This is one of the reasons I gave up on using mobiles, instead opting for either Aircards on laptops, or the solomon USB modems on desktops.

A breeze to install!

Sorry I'm not more help here...

cable DKU-5

According to the 6070 User's Guide the required cable is a CA-42, not that I could ever get it working! Almost every reference I can find indicates that the CA-42 is required. Note that even if you were to get the DKU-5 working your speeds would be limited. Your EDGE (capital "E" in a box) indicator might show that connection but the actual throughput would be limited.

What OS are you running? Is it legitimate and up to date? I'm assuming it is not Vista?

Does your notebook have an IR port?

Nokia DKU-5

Uses FBus, so the cable contains a serial to USB converter. Limited to 115200 bps.

Nokia CA-42

Newer model of DKU-5. For FBus, but behaves like a true USB device. Limited to 230400 bps.

if you are using dku-5 cable, you have to download the driver from the nokia site cause nokia pc suite only has dku-2,ca-42,ca-53 cable drivers integrated to it.

I can't see any IR port.

Dear Neeranam,

How are you?

I don't know whether this is relevant but you said

The new laptop seems ok - Acer Aspire.

I was fed up with my HP two repair problems within 3 years, so I went for ACER. And have ASpire 5580.

It seemed to be working fine, and then suddenly I couldn't upload. Living in Thailand I automatically chased the ISP who came round and then I ws able to use the HP - meaning there was an ACER problem. Since then the internet has been even more erratic than normal.

I don't know if it's relevant but don't rule out the ACER as a source of the problem.

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best

Note the following from the Nokia PC Suite main web-page:

Note: Nokia Connectivity Adapter Cable DKU-5 is no longer supported in Nokia PC Suite 6.83.

I'd recommend a complete re-start. Get the proper cable (CA-42) genuine Nokia rather than a copy, run all Windows Updates, de-install and re-install Nokia PC Suite.

Many Acer Aspire notebooks are sold here with copy OSes and this can lead to all sorts of compatibility issues. I'm assuming you purchased a legitimate license (OEM) for Windows XP Pro with your new notebook and can utilize Windows Updates.

If you give the exact model number one of us can see if it has an Ir port. Or you could go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager, and see if there is an entry for "Infrared Devices". Or maybe take a look at the user's manual for the PC?

doesnt matter.xp or vista, licensed or not.it should work.i assume you dont have an ir port so choices are, bluetooth or cable.you can configure the bluetooth connection with the help of the wizard on nokia pc suite.if you use usb cable, verify that your using the right cable model for your phone.if not dku-5,it should detect your phone.

Hi Neeranam,

I wasted many days trying to get this Nokia Suite to work. The best result was a connection lasting 20 seconds. Reason could be a non original cable. Mine came in a nice package with the name Nokia on it and even the Model name was mentioned, but I still think it is a fake. Checking many websites I found that hundreds of other people have the same problem and the only solution seems to be using the Profilic USB to Serial Com Port driver, without installing the Nokia Suite. After installing the cable driver you can setup a modem. Should Windows not be able to find a modem driver for the 6070 you can also use the drivers for 6020 or 6100, the 6070 is working fine with all of them.

The name of the Profilic driver is PL 2303 and it should be on one of the disks that came with the phone or cable, otherwise you have to download it.

Unfortunately the Nokia 6070 does not have Bluetooth, and I'm guessing that neither does the OP's Acer Aspire notebook.

Generally though it's a good thought as it is easy to add a Bluetooth USB adapter to a PC and get a Bluetooth-capable phone. Usually the Bluetooth USB adapters come with their own communications utilities which allow dialing, let's say *99#, so no need for Nokia PC Suite for internet connectivity.

The Nokia 3110 Classic, which is not that much more expensive than the 6070, supports Bluetooth (and EDGE) and even uses a standard mini-USB---USB cable (and a 2.5 mm headphone jack!) for PC connectivity. As soon as you plug the 3110 Classic in, it is recognized, drivers loaded and PC Suite recoginzes the phone and modem.
