‘No bikinis’ sign on Samae San Island removed by the Thai Navy

The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) has decided to remove a sign telling tourists not to wear bikinis from Samae San Island, off the eastern province of Chon Buri, to prevent any misunderstanding among foreign tourists that wearing bikinis on the island is prohibited, said Vice Admiral Pokkrong Monthatphalin, spokesman for the RTN yesterday (Friday).

He also explained that the RTN has not banned bikinis from the island, but merely wants to seek the cooperation of visitors by dressing properly and in a way which does not “offend Thai culture”.

The move follows a recent post on the “Quotidien de Thailande” webpage, showing a ‘no bikini’ sign displayed on the beaches of Samae San Island with an English request, “Please respect our culture.”

The navy did the right thing. We do respect your culture. And there is nothing disrespectful about wearing a bikini on a beach. We don't object to the locals bathing fully clothed, though it is very odd. Show some respect to our culture too. We tend to use a bathing suit for swimming. LOL. Not like we aren't bringing anything to the table here.

If they remove the bikinis as they approach the beach I guess they would be completely nude?

I can see where the misunderstanding can arise.

offend Thai culture

I'm pro Thai culture, but if you want foreign tourists you're going to have to accept the bikini.

I'm a little biased, I love the bikini. ????

I reckon there should be a law against fat chicks wearing G string bottoms, not a good look.

My gf makes her own bikinis, she very clever.

Maybe the tourists wanting to wear bikinis ought to go somewhere where they are more made to feel welcome.  Then they bitch and bleat about the lack of tourists and their FAR more important $$$$$$ ????

Don't know if it is the same now but many years ago on Samui  topless for the ladies was standard beach wear, or not wear as it would be.

And to the best of my knowledge there was no offence taken by anyone.

General Prayuts going to be angry....he told people they should not wear bikinis because....

"foreigners visiting the country’s world-famous beaches might be unsafe wearing bikinis in the wake of the killing of two British tourists this week"

...but then he apologized.

In Spain they have currently a campaign: Every woman’s body is beach-ready

Maybe Thais saw this and decided: Oh No!

I won't add a picture here because I don't want to ruin your day.

If you look it up don't say I didn't warn you.

Holy cow Batman! Was that girl hit with an ugly stick?

No Robin. It is just another Thai Katoey.

I thought Pattaya nightlife was all part of Thai culture, plenty of bikinis there, and even far fewer body coverings....????

“offend Thai culture”.

This topic of offending Thai culture could take many pages to define and semise what a real Thai culture means and when the hypocrisy start and the offending ends...

"Thai Culture"

Is that a local yogurt product?

And it wasn't so long ago that the Ministry of Culture (AKA MiniCult) had a painting of topless women on their home page. Awkward.

And don't make us dig out those "unseen Siam" photos from days of olde.

Not a bikini in sight.

Our leader wears the ribbon of the Knight Grand Commander First Class which has this clasp:

No bikinis, follow Thai culture
