Football - Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy has pleaded not guilty to another charge of rape.The 28-year-old entered the plea ahead of a trial, which is due to start at Chester Crown Court in England next Monday and is expected to last three months.

 

He now denies eight counts of rape, one of sexual assault and one of attempted rape. The offences against seven young women are alleged to have taken place at Mr Mendy's home between October 2018 and August 2021.

 

Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in the UEFA Super Cup held at The Olympic Stadium in Helsinki last night. Alaba and Benzema were the goal scorers.


The FIFA World Cup is set to start one day earlier than planned on Sunday, 20 November with hosts Qatar taking on Ecuador.The Group A opener was due to be played on 21 November as the third match of the competition. It followed discussions with Qatar and their opponents Ecuador. It fits in with the tradition of either the hosts or the holders being involved in the opening match.

 

Tennis - World number one Iga Swiatek comfortably progressed to the last 16 at the Canadian Open with a straight-set win over Ajla Tomljanovic.The 21 year old Pole, won 6-1 6-2 in Toronto and will meet Canadian 13th seed Leylah Fernandez or Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia next.  It is a 19th successive hard court win for the two-time Grand Slam champion.
