Crime Trang: Over 600 Modified Motorbikes Seized, Nearly 500 Illegal Exhausts Destroyed

Authorities in Trang Province have launched a major crackdown on illegal street racing and modified motorbikes, seizing more than 600 vehicles and destroying nearly 500 illegal exhaust pipes, while also making significant drug and weapons-related arrests. At a press conference held on 6 May, at the Trang Provincial Police Headquarters, Trang Governor Mr. Songklod Sawangwong and Provincial Police Commander Pol. Maj. Gen. Pattharawit Keetmotaneekul announced the results of the operation under the campaign “No Illegal Racing in Trang.” The effort, which took place from February to April, targeted unauthorised vehicle modifications and broader criminal activity across the province. Authorities confiscated a total of 607 illegally modified motorcycles. They also inspected 204 auto repair shops and parts retailers, as well as 50 educational institutions. In 11 of those schools, 44 illegal vehicles were discovered, and 44 students were given warnings. Fourteen sets of parents were called in for official discussions. In a symbolic act of enforcement, officials laid out 477 confiscated illegal exhaust pipes along a road and crushed them using a steamroller. The dramatic demonstration served as a stern warning to youth and street racing enthusiasts to stop engaging in dangerous and unlawful vehicle modifications. The Trang police outlined five strict measures to curb illegal street racing: 1. Immediate seizure and destruction of illegal vehicles and parts; 2. Legal accountability for parents of offending minors; 3. Increased monitoring in schools and garages; 4. Prohibition on garages modifying or selling unapproved parts without permission; 5. Shutdown of online pages promoting illegal street racing, with admins facing legal consequences. Alongside the vehicle crackdown, police also reported the results of anti-crime operations in other areas: • Drug arrests: 293 cases involving 308 suspects, with 161,900 methamphetamine pills and 12.6 grams of crystal meth seized. • Firearms offences: 85 cases with 84 illegal firearms confiscated. • Gambling offences: 11 cases involving 28 suspects. • Arrest warrants executed: 59 warrants leading to the arrest of 58 individuals. An elderly couple who made a humble living collecting recyclable waste were killed on the night of 5 May after being struck by a car while crossing a major highway in Nakhon Phanom Province. The fatal accident occurred around 22:00 on the Chayangkul Road, near the entrance to Ban Tong fresh market in That Phanom District. Police and emergency responders arrived at the scene to find a damaged black Honda City sedan, registration number from Nakhon Phanom, with a smashed windscreen. The vehicle had been travelling toward Mukdahan Province. The driver, Mr Noppakorn Sriyan, 30, who was accompanied by his wife, told investigators that he was unable to avoid the collision when a red Honda Wave motorcycle with a trailer suddenly pulled out from a side alley into the main road. The driver of the motorcycle, Mr Ngern Srithawong 74 and his wife, Mrs Toi Kulkor 71, who was riding pillion, were both killed instantly. The motorcycle and trailer were found damaged and thrown more than 20 metres from the point of impact. Mr Ngern and Mrs Toi were residents of Fang Daeng Subdistrict and earned their living by collecting and selling recyclable materials. According to family members, they lived in poverty, supporting themselves with this modest trade after their children moved away. Police confirmed that the car driver had not consumed alcohol. The aircraft, identified as a K-8 light attack jet, approached to within approximately two nautical miles of Thai airspace, triggering a rapid response from Thai defence forces. Air Force spokesman Air Vice Marshal Praphas Sornchaidee said the aerial intrusion, detected around 12:45 by radar systems of the Air Defence Command, prompted immediate action. The two F-16 jets, dispatched from Wing 4 in Nakhon Sawan, were ordered to identify and deter the unidentified aircraft as part of standard air patrol and sovereignty protection procedures. “The aircraft did not violate Thai airspace, but we considered the proximity a matter of concern and acted in accordance with professional interception protocols,” AVM Praphas said. “The mission was successful, and no hostile intent or incursion was detected.” Thai jets continued air combat patrols over Muang and Sai Yok districts throughout the afternoon to monitor the situation. The RTAF also issued a formal warning to Myanmar authorities to exercise caution in air operations near the shared border. The Myanmar K-8 jet had reportedly been involved in airstrikes earlier that day across the border in the Dawei region, specifically targeting a rebel position in Ban Thiki, Myitta Township. Explosions were reportedly observed near the Thai frontier at Ban Phu Nam Ron in Ban Kao subdistrict, Muang district, Kanchanaburi. A video showing the Myanmar aircraft releasing ordnance was circulated on social media, prompting concern among local residents. Kanchanaburi Governor Mr. Atisak Intratra confirmed that local authorities are monitoring the situation closely. “We are evaluating the situation continuously in coordination with security agencies,” he said. “No cross-border movements of displaced persons have been allowed, but humanitarian support in the form of food and supplies has been provided.” The incident has reignited public concerns in western Thailand about regional instability and the spillover effects of Myanmar’s ongoing internal conflict. However, officials reassured the public that Thai airspace remained uncompromised and that all necessary measures to protect national sovereignty had been effectively enforced.
