OVER 50 PERSONS currently employed among others as members of entourage for all 250 senators have been found to share the same family names with or be closely related to the unelected legislators, reported a human-rights activist group yesterday (Sept 6).

According to an iLaw report, more than 50 out of a total of 1,830 persons either currently employed as experts or specialists or close aides to the 250 senators reportedly share the same family names with or are closely related to the unelected legislators.

Each expert employed by the senators is given 24,000 baht in monthly salary whilst each specialist or close aide hired by the unelected lawmakers is given 15,000 baht in monthly pay out of the taxpayers’ money.

Nepotism in Thai politics? Who would have guessed. Thaough it would be 500 not 50 actually.  555

Yes, surprisingly low number

Is'nt that just the way it works......Third World (backwater) nepotism! Promotion or employment on merit? Merit is something you buy at the temple!

Those without the same names will undoubtedly have some other family connection.

Brazen corrupt nepotism on a grand scale but nothing new for a non elected bunch of coup fluffers.

Not much of an expert at 24,000 baht/month!

I thought that the justification for an all appointed senate was to curb the practice of "political clans" appointing there junior members to posts on the senate staff?

Each Senator gets five staff. These are obviously no-show jobs, unless the aging senator needs medical help, or needs to be woken up during debate.

I'd be shocked if the total number of nepotites is 50, golly, it might even be MORE than 1,250.

loads of predictable comments here about nepotism. like the west isnt littered with it too.

boring nothing new here.

This is a Thailand Forum and the particular topic is relating to the Thai senate.....I expect we see more of it here than many other countries....the topic is designed to comment on that, and the fact that taxpayers cover the cost. I hope they get value for money, but doubt it.

I have no idea what you are trying to say......

I am really surprised that the salaries paid are so low.

Their level of expertise in fiddling is astounding and all in house for peanuts ????

50/1830 is about 0.273% which is a very low number indeed.

Indeed. Historically, an overwhelming percentage of MPs of every colour are made up of present/former military and Ammat circles. This is the way it's always been......so any nepotistic club extensions should be expected.

Well....they don't build up much of a sweat at work on the rare occasions they turn up.
