Thailand succeeds in artificially breeding short mackerel

The Thai Fisheries Department has succeeded in artificially breeding short mackerel, known locally as “Pla Tu”, a favourite edible fish among Thai people. Hormone-induced spawning was used, with a high survival rate of the fry, according to Chalermchai Suwannarak, director-general of the department.

He said that they have been researching ways to conserve short mackerel in the wild and to increase its numbers in nature, to prevent depletion through overfishing.

Breeding the short mackerel in captivity is a considerable challenge, because the fish is fragile and dies easily after being moved from the sea, he said, adding that researchers at the Fisheries Department have spent years studying the environment of the fish, its spawning season and its food, among other things, in order to replicate the conditions in the spawning tanks.

If the aim was to breed tall mackerel surely there would be more to eat all round?

Or for that matter normal mackerel

breeding short mackerel,

So they can be more easily canned??

Canned Mackerel » Golden Diamond

great bait alive or dead is about all they are good for, the only reason thais eat them is because they  have netted all the decent fish so now use 1/2" mesh nets to take all the small under size stuff

Pla tu is an important fish in that, following steaming, it can be transported long distances from the catch point to the interior landlocked Provinces without chilling. It is a source of iodine which compensates for the near total lack of that element in laterite soil prevalent in Thailand. Iodine is essential to good  health and this little fish, along with fish sauce (Nahm Pla), provides a neccessary nutrient to the population. It is also very tasty. It was common, decades ago, to see rural people with huge goitres on their necks as a result of iodine deficiency.

Yes, very much so. I regularly eat Mackerel which I purchase as frozen fillets in packs from MAKRO.

For reference:

Mackerels are considered some of the most nutritious fishes. They're an excellent source of protein, vitamins B2, B3, B6, and B12, and vitamin D. Their flesh is also full of minerals like copper, selenium, and iodine. Some of these fishes also contain good amounts of iron and vitamin B1............. and Omega-3s.

They already do that. They use formalin.  And have done so for a long time.

This is really something that Thailand should be very proud of. Should be used on tourism brochures
