BANGKOK (NNT) - The 2022 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week is drawing near and host Thailand has made the appropriate preparations in all aspects. Of special attention is the provision of security for APEC leaders and APEC meeting attendees. In support of this cause and to foster confidence, the Royal Thai Police has been conducting a large-scale crime eradication drive.

Royal Thai Police Commissioner Damrongsak Kittipraphat announced the result of crime eradication efforts from October 10 to November 8. The police drive was initiated to promote safety and confidence ahead of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week next week.

According to Pol. Gen. Damrongsak, the police processed 11,811 cases involving guns, for which there were 10,450 suspects. 36 war weapons were confiscated, along with 5,345 unregistered guns and 936 licensed guns. 37,045 rounds of ammunition were confiscated and 4,342 explosive items were seized.

41,809 drug cases were processed, for which there were 43,027 suspects and about 49 million seized meth pills. 9,465 persons were arrested in accordance with outstanding criminal case warrants.

The police chief highlighted the arrests of sellers of BB guns modified to shoot real ammunition. The guns were sold online. About 100 guns and 13,000 rounds of ammunition were seized from these sellers. 11 explosive ordinances were also seized.

The police commissioner asserted there is no imminent security threat in particular at the moment. Nonetheless, officials are not remaining idle and have been conducting searches at various spots to ensure security.

Checkpoints were erected along the border and on routes leading into Bangkok. Security escort drills for convoys of APEC meeting attendees have also been held. Another drill will take place on the 10th with a full drill scheduled on November 12.

An anti-terrorism exercise will take place at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center – the venue for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting – on November 11. Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon will inspect the exercise in person.

There was never action on such scale.
what prompted it? And what is real purpose?

almost 10k arrests on outstanding arrest warrants is impressive. Were those criminals known earlier to police and followed in some way, to be busted at the same time?

That would be serious problem for courts to process that many cases

Thai police have taken into custody more than 60,000 suspects, on charges related to firearms and illegal narcotics, during a nation-wide crime suppression campaign, which began on October 10th, ahead of the APEC Summit in Bangkok on November 18th and 19th.

And Santa is real..

Comes to show you that when the police want to do their job, they can do it very efficiently, the key word here is 'when they do want'...

Why wait for a summit to clean up known violations of the law? Isn't it there job to do this constantly. Something smells fishy.

I have a stupid question.

Why did it take APEC to round these people up?

If there are warrants for their arrest they should have been arrested anyway.

One of the briefing slides for the APEC meeting needed some current and higher numbers so the police had a crackdown.  That slide has now been updated...so, no more crackdowns until the next big meeting or it's annual performance report time.

4300 explosive devices?  I need a breakdown on this.  Grandes? M80? Pipe bomb?

What can a modified bb gun shoot? .22s?

The old falang with an M16 to sell.

Hope apec goes off peacefully.   If you wanted to do something you would be in place before these road blocks started.
