Police from Thailand’s Technology Crime Suppression Division have seized nearly 30,000 SIM cards in recent house raids yesterday (Thursday), including raids in Bangkok and Nonthaburi Province.

 

Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol, the deputy national police chief, said that the SIM cards will be checked, to ascertain whetherthey have been used by call centre scam gangs.

 

He said that people who have sold their SIM cards to scammers or bought cards on their behalf may also face prosecution as accessories.

One way to stop scammers is for the phone companies and the police to monitor large volumes of sim card being sold and used, it is the ABC of seeking out gang's activities...

I was under the impression that Thai SIM cards had to be registered and that each person could only can buy a maximum of five SIM cards from each of the mobile phone service providers.

I <deleted> hate these call centre scammers.  Been pestered by the criminal <deleted> for years on and off both in Oz and here in Thailand.  Indians mainly.  The types you wish you could identify and meet in a dark alley with a baseball bat ......

I would not feel any sympathy if one day they cross the wrong guy and their call centres are blown up or burnt down as well. Usually they succeed with elderly and other vulnerable members of the community.  They can ruin someone's life in a day and not bat an eyelid.  Pure evil. 

To get one SIM card a few years ago, I had to jump through a few hoops.

The main Indian call centres are based in Kolkata.  They must be paying off the local cops.  When the cops are given highly actionable verifiable proof including video and addresses hardly anything ever happens.

 

There are plenty of videos by scam baiters on YT.
