Former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, who leaked extensive US intelligence surveillance operations, has been granted Russian citizenship.

The decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

Mr Snowden, 39, has been living in exile in Russia since exposing the National Security Agency (NSA) programme affecting millions of Americans in 2013.

Russian citizenship means the USA cannot extradite him. I understand he doesn't want to live in fear all his life. Assange is worse off and needs to be set free immediately. If anyone has seen the video of the helicopter shooting Reuters journalists and children it seems he did humanity a service.

if the usa haven't succeeded in 9 years to get him, they would never get him.

His american passport was cancelled when he was travelling from hong kong to south america, while he was transferring in Moscow airport. That's why is was stranded there.

Now he can travel internationally, if he wishes to.

He can't go to anywhere in europe. Even turkey is risky, as they are in nato.

Also thailand is barred.

Discussion with him some 11 months ago - starts at 1:40, after brief introduction. Second part at 19:30, 29:50, 35:00 (on Assange) and later.

That situation bods well for the future whistle blowers from the USA and elsewhere.
