Wandr
What is going on with the sites that calculate the USD - Baht exchange rate that Visa has set for the day? I have been getting a higher rate than what actually exists. For instance, right now (Dec 19) it is stating 35.16, when the actual rate you get is much lower than that. Is there a reliable site I can use for this purpose?

scubascuba3
When you say actual rate presumably you are referring to your card exchange rate? don't forget they often charge commission circ 2%, unless you have a specialist card that avoids it

You can plug in any bank fee (Foreign Currency Transaction fee), the default is 2% so remember to change it to 0% if your card(s) do not charge this fee. https://www.nerdwallet.com/best/credit-cards/no-foreign-transaction-fee
Everyman
Several debit cards also have no foreign transaction fee. Any capital one debit cards for example.
gargamon
Xe.com The app used to work well but they have put too much bloatware in. The website is still good.

KhunBENQ
In the past there were two different looking sites for Euro and US issued cards. Seems they have streamlined that: https://www.visa.co.uk/support/consumer/travel-support/exchange-rate-calculator.html https://usa.visa.com/support/consumer/travel-support/exchange-rate-calculator.html
KhunBENQ
Never has VISA used the mid market rates that a site like xe.com shows. They always cash in on a lower rate. And most card issuing banks eat another bite of the cake The links above are preset with 2% bank fee which you can change. Long ago when I used VISA at Thai ATMs I sometimes won a bit over last cash rates by the fact that VISA updated rates only once a day. No idea whether this still the case. Wandr
https://usa.visa.com/support/consumer/travel-support/exchange-rate-calculator.html This is giving 35.16 - try it. That is not the Visa rate now. http://www.vasuexchange.com/index.php For the "regular" exchange rate, not the Visa-set rate. I have been using these sites for years, so I am aware of the transaction fees and all that. And I know 35.16 is not the Visa rate because I did a transaction and calculated yesterday (rate does not change over weekend). Thanks for everyone's replies - let's hope we can figure out what is going on!

bamnutsak
You made a charge here in Thailand? In THB? When? I see 34.7657 as the Visa/0% "rate" right now? No clue where you're gettting 35.16? Or did you use DCC? Edited December 19, 2022 by bamnutsak

Correct. 7 hours ago, Wandr said: Yes, I know these sites. Both have 35.16 now - with a 0 foreign transaction fee. Basic error. You have to use the reverse rate. You "spend"/"buy" THB and pay in USD. E.g. you withdraw 10000 Baht and will be debited 287.60 USD. Which means your Dollar buys 34.77 Baht. Quote 10000 THB = 287.603969 USD % Mark-up over European Central Bank Rate = 0.60 1 THB = 0.028760 USD 1 USD = 34.770034 THB This new redesigned site is easy confusing. The old site said something like "your card currency". Edited December 19, 2022 by KhunBENQ 2

Now if you had a visa card from a thai bank and used it in the U.S. then yes, you'd pay 35.16 for one single dollar. Still unclear on what the OP is doing?
