At least so far in my reading of the book, Hoffer has drawn a stark distinction between Jewish people in Nazi-occupied Europe, weakly submitting to the gas, and Jewish people in nascent Israel in the late 1940s, aggressively pursuing the creation of their new state. To my mind, given what they had just experienced in Europe, it’s no wonder that they were hell-bent on building a militarized state that prioritized self-defense.
