Has your residence ever been broken into?

If yes do you live in a house or condominuim?

Were you injured? What happened? Can you think of any measure that could have helped prevent this occurance?

What was the Police response?

Were the criminals apprehended?

Lived here for six years and often times don't even lock the doors. No break-ins or thefts of any kind. Bicycles out front unlocked and all - no problem. Try that in California! Condo living is great!

What neighborhood do you live in?

I asked the same questions to my neighbors just before I bought my house. Most people here have high walls with broken glass, barb wire or steel spikes on the top, and everyone has these metal frames/bars in front of their windows.

Still nobody here has ever been robbed or had cars or bikes stolen.

I think the reason for their heightened security is the insurance situation. You can’t really insure against burglary in Thailand. Well you can but then its like max 100.000 and that won’t even cover the TV's. Also if you have a break in you have to be able to show forced entry into your home (broken lock, broken window etc.) and have the police come out to recognize it. That might be harder unless you are willing to pay them.

Yes. I was broken into about 3 years ago now. Rented house in central Pattaya. Forced entry through front doors whilst we were away.

Police attended. Made the right noises, but did nothing. Then got shitty with us when we followed up several times finding out what was happening. We also had very good suspects, and being an ex UK bobby I was pretty sure who had the motive to do it. This lead (a neighbour) was not followed up by the police, and we later found out the suspect was a porn dealer who was well conected with the local constabulary. Hense the failure to investigate I guess, and the fact we were told not to bother the police when trying to get information from them.

A complete waste of time. In fact they actually advised us to move out as we would probally be broken into again. We did move out one month later.

While renting in Suksabai Villa the house was entered one night and my wife woke up with a gun in her face. (I was working in Saudi at the time)

Lost a digital camera and video camera, plus my wife's gold.

Police came very quickly, but no result.

There are a lot of B&Es in that area, my current house has better security, including obvious CCTV and so on. Plus lights in the garden all night.

What about 'Neighbourhood Watch' or private security fiirms? I am sure that in the Suksabai Villa area we have enough people interested to be able to do something.

I have been living in Nakhon Pathom for about a year in a new house in a quiet, little village called Sampran. My house is in a 13 home development, small, but reasonably well-made homes with the occupiers local, mostly professional Thai business owners. There have been break-ins around the nearby small condos, but nothing in my development. My Thai GF is very security conscious (more so than me; she keeps a good lookout and knows how the local Thais can be!!!). We have the metal window bars, locked gate into the premises and cement walls around the property. A suggestion: Get a dog or two. It seems to me that Thai dogs have some in-bred abillity to be lazy sacks of flesh during the daytime hours, but after the sun goes down, watch out...they'll gut you like a dead fish in no time if you mess around with their master's property.

I think the worst areas are in Phuket (Patong Beach), Pattaya. I lived in Patong for a year before moving to Nakhon Pathom. Lot's of break-ins, petty theft there. Had some lady-boy climb onto my 2nd floor balcony in the small hotel I was staying in as there were some empty suitcases out there. Upon my waking up and seeing something on the balcony, I chased her away, and she scampered like monkey in no time down a tree. Other guests in the same hotel had large sums of money stolen etc. Also advise installing a safe that is mounted into the floor.

I fell asleep whilst my so called trusted Thai friend was in my house. I woke up to find my drawers had been ransacked, digital camera stolen and my 6 bt of gold. Went to the police with copy of there ID and photos, nothing ever came of it. The person even admitted to me on the telephone that they took the Camera to play with it and was going to return it, three years on, never seen them again.

I dont need an alarm system, i have 3 small dogs loudest barkers in central Pattaya.
