BANGKOK (NNT) - The government recently followed up on various quality-of-life missions in the northern provinces of Phayao and Lampang.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan was briefed on state operations in the areas, where the focus is currently on narcotics suppression and the elimination of encroachments into protected forests and national parks.

The deputy premier noted that he was satisfied with the government’s campaign to allow local residents to utilize areas of protected land and national parks for occupational purposes. At present, 58,000 rai of land are covered under the program, providing more than 14,300 residents with areas they can legally use for agricultural purposes.

General Prawit urged officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, as well as other relevant authorities, to combine their efforts in addressing the forest encroachment issue, while also promoting career development programs for locals.

Additionally, he instructed local governmental units to prepare for potential forest fires and PM2.5 issues during the upcoming dry season.

Concerning narcotics suppression, he said it was important to focus on the strength of communities, especially among educational institutes, by promoting social attitudes against illicit drugs and addictive substances.
