The Thai Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has warned eateries to be careful in the use of liquid nitrogen in the preparation of food and drinks, or face imprisonment or heavy fines if the substance is overused and has harmful effects on consumers.

TFDA Deputy Secretary-General Dr. Withid Sariddeechaikool also warned consumers to refrain from eating food or drinks mixed with liquid nitrogen, noting that inhaling, touching or ingesting liquid nitrogen can be very harmful to body tissues, adding that inhaling the gas directly may lead to unconsciousness.

If eating food mixed with liquid nitrogen, he suggested that consumers wait until all the gas has disappeared or refrain from consuming the food altogether if they are not sure about the quality.

  • I don't suppose the Thai FDA considers it necessary to advise the public on just how they should be wary of food cooked with the use of liquid nitrogen.

"...inhaling, touching or ingesting liquid nitrogen can be very harmful to body tissues..."

Why do they need it so cold?  But I guess vendors do anything and everything to get peoples attention and to hell with the consequences.  But liquid nitrogen isn't easy to handle, nor cheap AFIK.  ???

Imprisonment... Yeeh gods.

It’s used all over the world without any issues. I guess it comes down to how the Thais use it. The only problem I see here is the lack of control or monitoring of those who use it.

As ice is used in beer here then I guess anything goes.

In other news, the FDA warned citizens the the air they breathe contains more Nitrogen than Oxygen and could be harmful.......

Think we need advice and words of wisdom from Dr google Yong on this one ????

It is most decidedly not "used all over the world without any issues."

It has caused at least 20 injuries in Indonesia just recently - which is most likely what prompted this warning from the Thai FDA.
