Multiple injuries were reported after shots were fired at Michigan State University, prompting shelter in place orders amid a search for a suspect Monday evening, campus police said.

“The suspect is believed to be on foot right now. Community members on and off campus should continue to shelter in place. Police are continuing to respond,” MSU police tweeted.

Police reported shots fired near Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus around 8:30 p.m. ET, telling the campus community in a tweet to “Please secure-in-place immediately.”

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson described the heartbreak and horror at Michigan State University as "unfathomable."

"Holding the entire MSU community in my heart," Benson tweeted. "This repetitive terror cannot continue. We must come together and do whatever it takes to protect our kids & communities from gun violence."

Latest update from the police says the suspect is a short black male, carrying a handgun.

At least three people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at Michigan State University, police say.

As well as the three victims, police said the suspect had died apparently from a "self-inflicted gunshot wound".

Another five people were injured in the attack at the main campus in the city of East Lansing late on Monday.

Police described the suspect as "a black male, shorter in stature". They later said he was 43 years old with no known affiliation to the university.

Students and local residents were told to shelter-in-place during the manhunt, however police later lifted the order, saying there was "no longer a threat to campus".

They added that the suspect was "located off campus".

In photos released earlier, the suspect was wearing a denim jacket, a navy baseball cap and red trainers.

The shooting started shortly after 20:00 local time on Monday (01:00 GMT Tuesday).
