From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

From cradle to grave, the first contact for life-and-death matters and everything in between for Thais abroad, is often the consular officers at the Royal Thai Embassies and Consulates around the world.

Thai consular officers are duty-bound, as enshrined in the Constitution as the basic function of government, to protect and promote the interests of Thai nationals overseas, which certainly includes assisting fellow Thai nationals in need – at times in far flung corners of the world under arduous conditions – with no exceptions. This is indeed the single most important aspect of promoting and protecting Thailand’s interests abroad.

Unfortunately, of late, news reports abound on Thais injured or worse during their time overseas, whether as a result of a natural disaster as in the case of the earthquake in Turkey, or other calamities as in the case of the recent fire in Poipet, Cambodia.  There is also, no shortage of reports on Thai workers enduring appalling and abusive working conditions abroad.

Last year alone, the Department of Consular Affairs recorded 73,310 cases of consular assistance and services rendered to Thai nationals overseas. Notable cases were the case of a hundred Thai workers lured into illegal businesses and forced labor in Cambodia and the Philippines and the case of two Thai women held captive in a tiny apartment in Hong Kong. The plight of Thai berry pickers in Finland and Sweden also requires the continued assistance and coordination of the Embassies and relevant Ministries.

And I'm quite sure the opposite applies regarding foreign labour in Thailand.

Of course.

Yet, they're bound to promote such warm and fuzzy extended services to the good citizens - but in reality don't give a rat's backside.

This indifference towards respective nationals has become more than common among most embassy services, as they've all cut and become somewhat hostile towards their own.
