BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s National Environment Board is set to convene on March 15 to discuss forest fire and haze issues plaguing the country. The meeting comes after the Office of the ASEAN Secretary-General issued a "Second Level Alert" to all member countries, requesting their cooperation in tackling the issue.

According to satellite images from the Geoinformatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GITSDA) on Saturday (4 Mar), the past week has seen a critical escalation in the forest fire and PM2.5 dust levels in Thailand’s north and northeast, with over 2,500 hotspots detected in farm and forest areas across the country, and thousands more in neighboring countries.

Most hotspots in Thailand were found to be concentrated in forests. The three provinces with the most hotspots were Kanchanaburi, Tak and Mae Hong Son.

Jatuporn Buruspat, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, explained that the Office of the ASEAN Secretary-General issued the alert after more than 150 hotspots were detected in a single day.

Member nations are expected to continue their prevention and preparedness actions, conduct ground fire suppression as soon as possible to extinguish fires, and use water bombing to suppress fires. Burned areas will also be closely monitored and weekly reports on the current situation and actions taken by ASEAN member states are to be submitted.

Cloud-seeding to be used to control fires in Thailand’s western forests

The Royal Rain-making and Agricultural Aviation Department is expected to be cloud-seeding from this Saturday until next Monday to help contain fires in Thailand’s western forests, which appear to be out of control.

Atthaphon Charoenchansa, director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, said today (Tuesday) that may hotspots have been detected in the forests north of the Srinagarind Dam in Kanchanaburi.

He said that fires have now spread to dry evergreen woodland, which is only accessible after several hours of trekking through the forests.

The only thing out of control is the governments inept handling of burning and local governors not concerned about their residents.

Burning could be stopped overnight with the right approach.

suggestion: discuss it during rainy season, then you might have a plan ready when it actually happens. And regarding flooding, discuss it during dry season...

whatever, why bother

Backbone.

All they need to do is look locally. I would bet every village has at least a few people making charcoal. One small operation can fill the entire village and then some with smoke that can last all day and night. Our small village currently has 4 major burn operations. Only after many hours of work behind the scenes did we get the local government, NOT the village lead, to do something. At least we got the smokers inside the village to stop (most of the time). Now we can breath. This village also has a history of cancer deaths that would scare anyone. No one seems to care.

Oh goody, they'll wait a week, then meet to discuss, then convene a/some subcommittee(s), then we'll have a report drawn up, then the report will be discussed.....

What a great plan....only open problem....there are plenty of words but never anything but zero ACTION.

Fire all of these guys for starters and replace them with people of action.

Perhaps if they get a chest x ray, they may actually do something.

Serious financial penalties and 1 year in jail if caught, no questions asked.

Then these morons who do the burning may actually stop.

That’s all they ever do: they sit in their air conditioned offices, with the air purifiers probably on full blast, and they talk and discuss, and then they say they will closely monitor the situation, which means they will do absolutely nothing (because there is nothing in it for them, no money to be made) and then they go home and complain about the air pollution.

This has been going on for years, and will continue to go on for many years to come.

Wow this is a game changer... hahaha

To save time and energy, Just keep this report and post it every year.
