A missing radioactive cylinder, concealed information, and the public fallout

Most Thais are trying to piece together patchy information about the Cesium-137 cylinder that went missing from a plant in Prachin Buri and the possible impacts after radiation was detected in the furnace of a recycling plant nearby.

The incident, which has lacked a full explanation by authorities from the very beginning, has stirred up doubt, fear and even panic.

What happened?

The National Power Plant A Co Ltd lodged a complaint with police on March 10 that a Cesium-137 cylinder had gone missing from its plant at 304 Industrial Park in Prachin Buri’s Sri Maha Pho district. The cylinder of radioactive isotope was installed at the plant in the 1990s.

I don't think they really know, but not to worry, Prayut said everything was okay.

Hope Thais will never allow nuclear energy here. It's just asking for trouble.

‘Cos Thai’s are the only ones who would allow this to happen right ???

How does this information (BBC news snippet below) contradict your conformation bias ???

Unfortunately, after three decades here, i know that no matter how serious the cock up, Thais will make it. Who cares what Oz does, I live here.

Was it hushed up and did children start falling ill?

There's no evidence at the moment that those children fell ill because of the Cesium-137 cylinder.

As I posted in another thread, their symptoms include a cough and a runny nose, and those two symptoms don't seem to be related to exposure to high levels of radioactivity.

Correct, to suggest cold like symptoms are caused by low level radiation or any level for that matter is complete nonsense.

Dust from factory would not likely be high levels of radioactivity - but perhaps enough to cause issues, just as the dirty air does, but with potential long term issues more severe.  There were repertory issues and that can be a radiation effect.

This is Thai modus operandi 101.

I worked for a company that lost a radioactive source tube when the Montara platform burnt down as a result of an uncontrolled blowout on the Seadrill West Atlas in 2009,

The same company lost another source tube out in the bush, same thing as the story you posted, fell off the back of a ute and was never recovered.  ????
