Police say they  are closing in on a hacker who threatened to release data stolen in an alleged security breach affecting millions of people.


A message posted on a forum claimed the hacker had names, addresses, birthdates, ID card numbers and telephone numbers of 55 million Thai nationals.


The hacker threatened to expose the information if a government agency failed to meet a ransom demand by April 5th.


The Thai Consumer Council has stepped up calls for the government to do better to protect people against data theft as the incident has caused a widespread scare among consumers. 

 

Fires that continue to rage within a national park in Chiangmai have prompted authorities to declare the area a disaster zone. 

 

The local governor said the blaze was started by local villagers who believed fires would help local mushroom to grow more easily. 


Now the fight was on to extinguish the blaze which had spread.

 

One  man died after he was shot at least 6 times just a few hundred meters away from a police station in Bangkok. He was identified as a 23 year old student at a local college.


A witness said two men on a motorcycle approached him then opened fire.

 

A Swedish man has been arrested by the Immigration officers for overstaying his visa by more than seven years.
