Daily News Thai Caption: Confidence trick - theft of money

Daily News reported on the arrest of two Liberian nationals who were named in a 12 March Don Muang court warrant for conspiracy to commit fraud.

The suspects - named only as A,45, and B, 41, by this media - were arrested at a condominium in the Rama 9 area of Din Daeng in the Thai capital Bangkok.

On 30th of March a foreign businessman had gone to the Samran Rat police telling them how he was conned into parting with about 1 million baht in US currency for what turned out to be just a lump of gold plated metal, not real gold.

The businessman had been recommended to the Liberians by a Laotian man and believed they could sell a kilo of gold for two million baht.

They agreed to sell him part for one million baht or $29,325.

They all met at a hotel where the victim was shown cash allegedly from a previous deal to gain his confidence.

They went to a lathe works in the area but during the journey one of the Africans feigned illness.

The businessman was left with the lump of almost worthless metal as security as the Africans disappeared after a confidence trick that saw them take his money.

But police used CCTV to track them down to their condo.

The Liberians denied everything but the police believe they have enough evidence to convict.

Siam Rath had a similar story and a picture of the suspects that they named as Charles B.T., 45, and Francis W.W. aged 41.

Current Price: ฿2,241,388 THB

Why try to buy gold at around the normal price?  Avoiding tax?

Africans at it again. But the guy buying should have had it checked out first.

Wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them, and I often wonder what guys like that are doing here, and a good bet would be that they are up to no good! No, really!

Pixels have totally spoiled the pointing! 1/10!

The things you believe if you’re greedy...

Unfortunately, there are many gullible folks out there.

I just hope these countless African scams do not cause any more delay to receive my millions from the Nigerian Prince.

It has been a while now since I sent them that huge amount of cash to prepay the transfer fees.

you sell it and make 12% profit......????‍♂️

"The businessman was left with the lump of almost worthless metal as security"
makes it all sound fishy though
like he was actually trying to buy something else....

The BIB step up and catch two easily identified suspects using CCTV with a nice pile of cash at their apartment. Sounds like a set up by Mr Laos. The Liberians will have time to work out the flaws in their scam/s.

So many numbers in this story but dose anything add up and where is the cash now ????

Maybe the Chinese man has to have official evidence that he was conned before going back to China !!

Business man they say... LOL

When there’s plenty of currency floating around in a condo bib are quick at taking the matter into their own hands. The issue is how it will be distributed between bib and whether the Laos guy is going to get anything. I doubt it as his reward will be not going to jail.

You got to be always very careful with any type scams like that in thailand and these people.Walk away before it even starts

1kg is $63,500 mkt price. Why would anyone sell gold for under half price unless it was either fake or stolen.

Agree. Scammers like that need greedy victims.

Buying gold for half of the price from an African or a top iPhone for 100€ online or sending money to Nigeria to earn millions - no sympathy.

Agree. Viet Nam actually has the death penalty for various crimes (mainly drug related) and will use it without hesitation.
