Setting up IPhone while on vacation in home country

Hi. I'm planning a trip to the US this year after being away for many, many years. I'll be taking my IPhone with me, so I'd like to request your help on how to activate the phone once I get there. Please understand that I'm a complete beginner at this, so I'd appreciate if you could clearly explain the steps I should take to activate my phone when I arrive in the US. Thanks!
