Prayut Chan-ocha came into power through a military coup d’etat on May 22, 2014, overthrowing the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

 

Prayut, who was the Commander-in-Chief of the Army at the time, staged the coup following months of political unrest and protests in Bangkok and other major cities in Thailand. He had stated multiple times that he would not carry out the coup previously.

 

The military declared martial law, suspended the constitution, and dissolved the government.
