A parcel, containing a handbag which belonged to one of the 14 victims who died from suspected cyanide poisoning, has been sent to a close friend of the serial murder suspect Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, police reported today (Thursday).

The parcel does not bear the name of the sender, but was sent from Tha Maka sub-district in Tha Maka district of Kanchanaburi province, where Sararat’s parents have a residence.

The recipient did not, however, open the parcel but handed it over to Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, the deputy national police chief, who ordered the parcel to be opened. Inside there was a brand name handbag, worth about 50,000 baht, two coin wallets and one smart phone.

How would she of known who the package came from or what might be in it?  No senders name on the package and unopened.  It might not have been the first time she received a package like that.

Anyway the post office should have a record of who mailed it.  You have to give them your ID to send a package.

Looks as though she sent the package to retrieve later.  She's killed for a lot less.  Probably just told a "friend" that there's a package coming to your house, "could you hold it for me, I'll give you 200 baht and a bag of crisps".

Is that a new rule?

I have never had to show id when sending a package either at a PO or at a courier.

Not a new rule. Even just sending a letter by EMS I have to show my passport. For Thais, it is their ID card.

Cyanide.

I have a vague recollection of such a rule being imposed some years ago... requiring ID to send packages. Possibly linked to drug smuggling. Implementation, as always, may be sketchy.
