amexpat
^^ What he said. But I didn't go to consulate. I found the instructions clear enough for my case. And I sent it EMS to Embassy in BKK. No problem at all.

racyrick
Took 5 weeks and just got passport in the mail yesterday. No problems, but always worry.
retiree
Not terrified. Or worried -- have never had a problem here just showing a cellphone pic or Xerox copy. After 5 weeks I got an e-mail from the Embassy (with tracking number) saying they'd mail my new passport in a couple of days. Arrived 3 days later. Start to finish: 5 weeks 4 days as advertised. -- Retiree
bamnutsak
I assume everyone who files for a renewal here is receiving a Next Gen Passport (NGP)? https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/passport-help/next-generation-passport.html Note the new numbering scheme: The passport number in the NGP book begins with a letter, followed by eight numbers. It is located in the top right corner of your data page and is included throughout the NGP book on the bottom of each page. Not sure if delays in the U.S. affect renewals submitted here but...the USEMBBKK site still says five to six weeks, so maybe not. You can prepare your passport application package at any time and the process may take up to five to six weeks from the date we receive your application to when you receive your new passport book by mail. If you are renewing your passport card by mail please expect six weeks to receive your replacement card. US passport applications are now backlogged up to 13 weeks — making it almost too late to get one until 2024 Waits for renewals have increased from 11 weeks to 13 weeks. https://www.businessinsider.com/us-passport-renewal-application-backlog-up-to-eleven-weeks-2023-2 BTW I did notice this change on the USEMBBKK website. As of April 10, 2023, the Embassy/Consulate will no longer issue passport linkage letters with newly issued passports. If a Thai government office requests one, your cancelled passport and your newly issued passport will suffice. You may download this letter (PDF 70KB) in Thai and English that explains the change in Embassy policy. https://th.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/passports/adult-passport-renew/
