PHUKET Governor Narong Woonciew issued a health alert that a diarrhoea outbreak has spread across the island with the suspected cause being contaminated drinking water and ice, TV Channel 7 said.

Accompanied by Dr. Kusak Kukiatkul, the provincial public health doctor, and other officials Narong said Phuket has a history of being hit by diarrhoea outbreak with the start of the rainy season increasing the risk.

Diarrhoeal disease can be caused by either bacteria or virus, such as norovirus or rotavirus.

The outbreak first emerged towards the end of May at a school where around 50 to 60 students fell sick. However health inspectors did not find any contaminated food or water served at the canteen.

So keep investigating, it's obviously something connected to the school.

Diarrhoea is spreading in Phuket, with an average of about 150 cases being treated at state and private hospitals per day and the outbreak is expected to persist for 1-2 months, according to Dr. Kusak Kukiattikoon, the provincial health chief.

He said that the condition is spreading in all age groups, but mostly among students. Patients are complaining of abdominal pain, watery stools and vomiting, with some also having a fever.

Dr. Kusak suspects that the patients have consumed unhygienic food, drinking water or ice contaminated with the Noro or Rota virus or E.coli bacteria.
