Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) spokesperson Aekwaranyoo Amrapal has clarified that the city was not responsible for the placement of a sign instructing wheelchair users to utilize roads.

The clarification came after CCTV footage revealed an unidentified individual on a bicycle installing the controversial sign on a motorcycle barrier preventing motorbikes from using sidewalks. The area has witnessed repeated parking and riding violations on its sidewalks, reported Daily News.

On June 12th, the controversy started when an image of a signboard was shared online. The sign, spotted outside a condominium in the Jomthong district, read, "From the municipality, wheelchair users and tricycle users with disabilities should run in the middle of the road or cross over."

The message led to criticism and calls for investigations into its appropriateness and whether the city was indeed behind it, as it inconvenienced pedestrians.

The Jomthong district office initially explained that the incident was a response to complaints via the Traffy Fondue system about excessive parking and riding on the sidewalk. They subsequently installed barriers to prevent further violations in that area.

The investigation into the sign placement revealed that an individual on a bicycle had installed the sign on Sunday, June 11th, 2023, at 10:53 am, according to CCTV footage. This action misled the public into believing that the city was endorsing these guidelines.

"Although we've installed barriers to prevent motorcycles from using the sidewalks, we have found many violators during our inspections. We urge citizens to cooperate and respect the rules for the safety of everyone," the BMA spokesperson said.

Can someone please explain to me the logic in the photo. They erect a barrier to stop bikes, yet leave a hole big enough for a wheelchair? Will bike riders say to themselves, "I cannot go through there because it is for wheelchairs only"....
