Amazon deforestation down by a third in 2023, says Brazilian government

Featured Replies

Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon fell by 33.6% in the first six months of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's term compared with the same period in 2022, the government says.

Its suggests the rainforest shrank by 2,649 sq km this January-June, down from 3,988 sq km in those six months last year under President Bolsonaro.

The released government satellite data has not been independently verified.

Lula has pledged to end deforestation, or forest clearance, by 2030.

So still galloping ahead then...

Needs to be zero. About time for those "world leaders" to put up or shut up. So far they have achieved zilch, IMO.

Not just Brazil- apparently huge areas of Africa and SEA being deforested.

At this rate will any forest be left by then- pathetic.

Seems, to me, we have most of the world leaders carping on about "how we are meeting our targets" "on track to reduce emissions"  etc. etc. And, in the meantime, just carrying on just the way it always been, knowing they will all be long gone by the time the sh*t hits the fan.

Clear proof that getting rid of far right leaders benefits the environment.

That's like saying that Dodo killings are down 100% since the 17th century.
