A senator issued an open letter on Saturday asking his fellow senators to vote for Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat as the next prime minister during the joint sitting on Thursday.

 

Vudhibhandhu Vichairatana wrote, in what he called his second open letter, that he would follow the instructions of HM the King, given at the inauguration ceremony of the lower House last week, to carry out his duties for the benefit of the country’s stability and of the people.

 

He said there may be strong and wide criticism concerning the suitability of an individual, that is just a part of freedom of expression. There have, however, been opinions expressed which are not appropriate and based on bias.

without conflict of interest? Both Prayut and Prawit have brothers in the Senate. How is that not a conflict of interest?

An honest senator , rare as hens teeth. The fact that his social circle might now evaporate somewhat shouldn't  bother him since the more self interested senators are not worthy of any attention.

We will soon know which of his colleagues will not heed the instruction from the King. The voting is based on open ballot system and participant's choices are not confidential and it will be telecast live. 

My gut feeling is a sufficient number of senators will abstain so Pita will be elected as Prime Minister.

If a senator abstains is that taken as a YES vote?

Abstaining by large number of senators will not help Pita. The voting process under the Organic Law 2017 require the prime ministerial candidate to secure a majority of 376 of 750 votes. The Secretariate of the House will call out the names of the MPs and Senators and they can vote as approve, dissaprove or abstain.

If they abstain that is effectively a no vote...the new PM needs a majority of the 750 eligible votes from MPs and senators, so 376 no matter how many actually vote.

Interesting...do I understand 376 votes are needed....if say some Democrat is on sick leave (or hiding in the toilet (another country)) (to avoid taking side) it is equal to a no vote?

Or lets say 1 MFP MP is really sick than they still need 376 and not 375, right?

Would mean there is no "abstain" as an abstain is equal to no....Interesting....don't know what I should think about that.

Abstention from voting is a form of exercising one's right to vote. When someone confirms that they are abstaining from voting, it means they are voting neither for nor against the motion at hand. They are nevertheless taking part in the election through expressing neither approval nor disapproval for a particular candidate, party or motion.

Thailand has freedom of expression?

Junta-appointed senator Amphon Jondawattana said on Mon he will vote for Pita as PM on Thurs & it's not about the individual but about respecting the will of the people. Amphon added MFP's pledge to amend the lese majeste law is a matter of the legislative branch.

If a quorum is defined by needing a certain number of votes from eligible voters then voting abstain or no has the exact same effect because the outcome is dictated by "voted yes" or "didn't vote yes". Both abstain and "no" fall under "didn't vote yes". If instead in a voting system the quorum is defined by the number of yes votes from the total number of votes then abstain would have a different meaning.
