Expats and Khmers mourn popular Australian hotelier, killed in Phnom Penh crash

Tributes have been paid to a well-known Australian hotelier, Richard Pobitzer, who died in a motorcycle accident last week in central Phnom Penh
Mr Pobitzer – the Executive Assistant to General Manager of the Sun & Moon Hotel – was seriously injured when the moto he was driving was hit by a white Alphard car, driven by another foreigner, on the 13th of July along Preah Suramarit Road, Chaktomuk Sangkat, Daun Penh District, Phnom Penh
Witnesses say that the Alphard was seen driving carelessly at high speeds when it hit Mr Pobitzer.


In the ensuing crash, the victim was dragged for several metres along the road. Mr Pobitzer was rushed to hospital – but died later in of his injuries, with work colleagues holding a vigil by his bedside The Alphard driver was detained by the police and taken to the Chaktomuk Sangkat Administrative Police Station for further questioning, although it is unclear as to whether he was charged with any crime.

 

Mr Pobitzer, who had worked in hospitality in Australia for 20 years before coming to Cambodia, was a well-known and well liked member of the capital’s expat community. Mr Pobitzer’s family are understood to be in Cambodia to take care of funeral arrangements.
