BANGKOK (NNT) - Police have released the results of an extensive month-long crackdown on illegal weapons, seizing a significant number of guns and ammunition while apprehending as many as 966 suspects. The crackdown, launched on July 1, saw law enforcement agencies raid 1,658 targets nationwide in an effort to curb criminal activities associated with them.

Royal Thai Police Deputy Police Chief Pol Gen Torsak Sukwimol disclosed that as of July 21, the results of the operation include the confiscation of 911 illegal firearms, along with 44,540 rounds of assorted ammunition. In addition to the weapons and ammunition, the authorities also managed to seize two explosives and 6,239 methamphetamine pills.

In Krabi’s Khao Phanom district, a raid was conducted at a residence owned by a 28-year-old man who was wanted on multiple warrants for drug-related charges and attempted murder. The operation led to a confrontation with police, resulting in the suspect’s death in a shootout. Following the incident, authorities conducted a thorough search of the area and discovered a cache of weapons near the suspect’s body, including a 9mm Mauser pistol, one M67 hand grenade, and two smoke grenades.

The operation is part of a larger nationwide crackdown on illegal guns and criminal activities, overseen by Assistant Police Chief Pol Lt Gen Samran Nualma and involving cooperation among multiple law enforcement agencies. These include the Metropolitan Police Bureau, Provincial Police Regions 1-9, Central Investigation Bureau, Narcotic Suppression Bureau, Tourist Police Bureau, Immigration Police Bureau, Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, and Border Patrol Police.
