71 km south of Khon Kaen (and about 10 km south of Phon), the highway rises high in the air on quite a long overpass that must have cost a small fortune.

I have often wondered what it goes over, as it isn't possible to see down.

According to the map, the railway is nowhere near and I have seen no sign of a big river.

Can anyone enlighten me, please?

Yeah, its a beauty. If we are talking about the same overpass, I believe it goes over the rail line which parallels hwy 2 to the west from Korat and then at the overpass parallels to the east. For reasons unknown to the average farang, the bridge engineers opted to keep the road running almost straight with the tracks for a few hundred meters rather than making the bridge cut straight across the tracks. Hence the unusual length.

It's all down to those stupid highways people again! Someone in the drawing dept. made a mistake with the plans for the new road. Instead of putting on the drawing "Make up to a depth of 21mms." which would be about normal for a Thai highway, they wrote "Make up to a depth of 21 mts." Looks like there won't be any more new roads in the area for the next 20 years until someone as made up the deficit in the piggy bank! :o:D
