Supersititions & Fortune-Telling

Recommended Posts

I've noticed a lot of derogatory comments about Thais on these forums regarding their beliefs in superstitions and fortune-telling.

But it's not just Thailand.

1 - Regarding fortune-telling, it has exploded in the West in recent years, There must be 10,000 Tarot readers on Youtube

2 - Regarding superstitions, the old generations from Europe had some superstitions. I can't remember off the top of my head, but my grandmother used to rattle some off. I will look it up online. No one remembers a grandmother with superstitions? It's not just Thailand.

It seems to be it existed in western cultures, but then it was lost and dismissed as rubbish. But is it because people became more educated? Possibly, but that conflicts with the rise in popularity in Tarot in the West ... is Tarot also a sign of a lesser education?

If the West is so much more "educated" than Thailand, why are superstitions seen as silly but yet Tarot is getting more popular?

No one had a grandmother with superstitions? Were they all silly?

Some people believe that there is an old guy in the sky who made everything and knows everything.

But obviously that is serious and no superstition ... ????

No mention of GOD or religion in this thread please.

We already have 2 threads on that topic on this forum.

Thank you!

I'm OK with Black Magic.

You can find good black magic in Belize.

And, it's totally acceptable.

And then there is Black Magic Woman.

And, Voodoo Child

I spent some time in the Jungle of Belize.

It's weird in the jungle.

Just don't ask them about Voodoo when you get there.

They are super sensitive about this topic.

Santana was the strangest thing to ever hit Tanglewood, for sure.

I prefer John Prine to that hard fast dissonant guitar that does my head in.

Only wish I had heard of John Prine sooner. They only played the head-banging stuff on the radio.

It has always been my policy to never discuss two topics with people I meet:

Religion

Politics

When I go to church, for example, I never stand up in the pews and shout, "There is no God!"

I classify "superstition" as being part of my definition of religion.

And so, I don't discuss this, either, with people I meet.

Debating religion and politics with people I meet is also of zero interest to me.

I can think of 4. Knock on wood, throwing salt over your shoulder, the number 13, breaking a mirror. But never knew anyone that believed any of them. My grandmother came from the old US south, and I am sure she had some-- but I don't remember any of them.

Divination is most definitely a real ability.

Just got to do your due diligence on the person and their modality of 'skrying'...and read up on the trickster methods of "cold and hot reading".

Tarot cards are a bit deeper than fortune telling, it just carries the symbology forward through society to new society with its utility value = direction and more certainty.

Ever wonder why each person is so contorted  in the Major Arcana...?

I thought so ! It keeps you up at night ...

Each body is a letter - in fact a Hebrew letter - and the cards also map over on to the Kabbalistic Tree of Life.

"The Paths of the Tree of Life and Tarot Major Arcana"

Yes, cue the laugh emoticons below - those that have never had exact names/events/dates/locations/private unusual items highlighted by the reader.

Anyway, leave you to your belief it's 100% b/s....

well, just found an example of superstition.

serpentza and laowhy86 are talking about the major flooding that took place in Beijing.

and then they connect it to superstition:

"The biggest floods in China in over 100 years. Is this a sign that the CCP's reign is coming to an end?"

And then they quote a philosopher from 300 BC:

... floods and droughts come by the agency of heaven , then the altars should be replaced.

Then serpentza says CCP wiped out religion, but not superstition.

Let's see if the the CCP's reign does come to an end soon.
Let's hope it does.
