The Deputy Mayor of Pattaya Manoch Nongyai inspected a “historic tree” on Walking Street in South Pattaya on Wednesday, August 30th, to reassure the public that the city will not tear it down after some businesses lodged complaints against it for its outstretched limbs and called for trimming, but not chopping, of the tree.

The tree, which is over 80 years old, had become the subject of recent complaints mainly concerning its branches that have extended into private spaces of nearby businesses.

The tree is actually a tamarind tree, and it is considered one of the most iconic symbols of Walking Street. It has been there for decades and is a visible symbol in pictures of the early days of Walking Street in the 70s and 80s, making residents nearby bond with it both physically and spiritually.

Meanwhile, they have cut most of the old trees down along Beach Road to build more parking spaces  because most of the other side of Beach Road is a parking lot for double parked buses, motorbike rentals, food carts, Song Tows and every other illegal operation.

Save trees, eat a beaver.

These peope absolutely despise trees....

(except for their beloved Palm trees of course)

They cut down the majority of the lovely trees on beach road in 2013 to make a extra lane that was never needed...

And on the very first day of work on the new promenade repaving (2 years ago).....They got out the chainsaws and tried their best to cut every last remaining tree on beach road.....Only a huge citizens protest saved a small number of trees from being cut....

Protecting the Walking Street tree?......Thats a good laugh.....

And well they care about that Walking Street tree......

But unfortunately it had to be cut....

They did not want to cut it......But well they had to............

Trust me folks--This is the future....

They would not even be talking about that tree unless they already had plans to cut it down..

are illegal sea-food restaurants on the beach side of Walking Street; protected from the law far longer than the tree has been growing.

Don't worry with all that stuff wrapped around it the termites will have a good place to live.
