Justice whispers: Thaksin’s sentence may shrink yet

Undisclosed sources within the Justice Ministry leaked news that the sentences handed to Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra could be reduced further.

Thaksin’s return to Thailand on Tuesday, August 22 this year marked the initiation of legal proceedings against him, encompassing three charges that had been levied against him before he departed from the country in 2008.

The 74 year old politician was immediately taken into custody upon his arrival in Bangkok, only to be transferred to a Police General Hospital later that night due to his pre-existing congenital diseases. These conditions include heart disease, lung disease, high blood pressure, and a herniated disc.

Initially, Thaksin was facing a sentence of approximately eight years in prison. However, he received a royal pardon on Friday, September 1, resulting in a reduced punishment of one year of incarceration.

Currently, he remains hospital but there is widespread speculation among residents and academics that Thaksin may be granted parole sooner rather than later.

Why is this news?

In a country where :-

Any democratic government is overthrown (or infiltrated) by the military

Election promised are broken in weeks

Blatant vote buying is almost compulsory (10,000 baht per citizen?)

Politicians regularly 'borrow' watches from dead friends

A convicted cop killer regularly flies around the world in a private jet attending F1 races

A convicted drug smuggler becomes an MP and sits in government

Yet an MP from a newly formed party is prosecuted for telling people that a really good beer is brewed in his constituency.

Knowledgeable circles certainly aren't.

Way ahead of the curve.

This particular saga goes on.....and is certainly something that gets the Thaksin-haters in a spin.

I don't exactly love the guy myself (though I admit to having more time & respect for him than the establishment mafia who brought him down).

But it all gets me wondering: many from all sides....Thaksin-haters, to Thaksin-likers, to those who neither hate or like him....still go on about 'justice'. As in 'justice must be served'.

Well, yes...of course....but a) do they who think that way know precisely the proper history of his exile as a so-called 'fugitive'? The reason for it? What was ACTUALLY the truth of it? (I'm not denying the possibility of his guilt.)

And b) if justice is the issue with Thaksin, for allegedly using the office of PM to buy some land cheap......

.....do they who point their finger at Thaksin have ANY idea about the much, much, MUCH worse level of corrupt criminality committed by those who sought to - and did - bring him down?

We're all being played with.....or in 1 word, manipulated......by this media circus.

They set the pace, don't they! Integrity does'nt translate! Wonderful culture! :jap:

Shrink?  Maybe, but total evaporation is far more likely as I'm sure that Mr T will get what he has paid for.!

Really?

This is my shocked face. ????

The guy flies in and a brand new golf stream jet. Did anybody really think that he was gonna serve any time in jail TIT

Gee ya don't say? The incredible shrinking sentence. Some noses out of joint, no doubt.

LOS...Land of Shams

You don't need to 'whisper' it; of course his sentence will be reduced.  The only question is by how much.  Likely, a lot.

What an unexpected surprise! NOT! Rotten, all the way back to their karmic wheels.

Almost all Farangs I know aren't surprised, but funny that almost all Thai's I know are surprised.  Go figure..

I wouldn't be too surprised but it will cause uproar in some sections of Thai society. There's still a lot of people who don't like him and want him back around.

Well played K.Thaksin.

Love it when a plan comes together.

Be interesting to know how many millions of dollars this cost him to come home. Or billions.
