Alert over polio discovery in Melbourne

A national health alert has been issued, particularly for airline passengers, after a 22-year-old Pakistani man was diagnosed with polio, the first case reported in Australia since 1986.

...............A national health alert was issued tonight after information the infected man had travelled on Thai Airlines flight TG999 from Bangkok on July 2.

Health authorities are trying to contact passengers on that flight.

It is not known how many people were on board.

Passengers are urged to phone the National Health Info hotline on 1800 004 599 between 8.30am and 10pm (AEST)................................................

Health officials have begun immunising many of the passengers who shared a Thai Airways flight with a man diagnosed with polio, but about half are still to be found.

A 22-year-old student from Pakistan has been diagnosed with the first case of polio in Australia in 20 years and remains quarantined in a Melbourne hospital.
